METABOLIC SYNDROME Flashcards
What is metabolic syndrome defined as?
A clustering of specific CV disease risk factors whose underlying pathophysiology is thought to be related to insulin resistance
What are metabolic abnormalities?
Obesity, increased plasma triglycerides, decreased HDL, hypertension, systematic inflammation detected by measuring plasma CRP, abnormal fibrinolysis, abnormal function of the vascular endothelium, macro vascular disease like coronary artery, and cerebral vascular an peripheral artery disease
Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when the patient meets 3 or more of the following criteria:
- Abdominal obesity: waist circumference >88cm in women, >102cm in men
- Triglycerides: > or equal to 1.7 mmol/L
- HDL: >1.3mmol/L in women or <1.0mmol/L in men
- BP: >130/85mmHg
- Fasting Plasma Glucose: >5.6mmol/L
Are insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome associated?
Yes
- and associated CV risks should be evaluated
