GLUCOSE METABOLISM Flashcards
What is glucose?
6 carbon molecule and serves as an efficient fuel source
What is glucose broken down in to?
Carbon dioxide and water an then metabolized in the presence of oxygen
What systems solely rely on glucose as their source of fuel?
Brain and nervous system
- other tissues organ systems can use other non carb fuel (fatty acids and ketones)
Can the brain synthesize or store glucose?
NO
- cannot store more than a few minutes worth of glucose supply
Fasting blood glucose is tightly regulated between what mmol/L?
4.4-5.0
Insulin is secreted by what? And where?
Beta cells. In pancreas in response to rising blood glucose
After a meal, 2/3 of glucose is stored where? And as what?
Liver. Glycogen
How does the liver release glucose?
By breaking down glycogen in a process called glycogenolysis to maintain normoglycemia
Once liver and skeletal muscles saturated with glycogen, what happens to the extra glucose?
Converted into fatty acids by the liver - stored as triglycerides in adipose tissue (tat)
What is the process of gluconeogenesis?
Liver synthesizes glucose from non carb sources
