Who was Cecil Rhodes and what did he believe in?
Regarded as britains most well known empire builder he was an imperialist and believed the Britain should extend its power and influence over other parts of the world by any means possible
What did Cecil Rhodes do during the scramble for Africa?
- when gold and diamonds were discovered Rhodes was refused permission to mine there he tried to get rid of the boer leader by force but failed
- Britain eventually won the wars and gained more territory
How was Cecil Rhodes viewed?
Rhodes was a controversial person
- when he was a politician he introduced an act that pushed back black people from their lands and increased taxes on their homes
- he also had many supporters who believed he brought vast wealth to Britain and made Southern Africa more stable
Where and what was the Suez Canal?
Egypt, important trade link between Mediterranean Sea and Indian sea and was vital for Britains access to India.
