What were the causes of the Manchurian crisis?
- In 1929 the Wall Street crash started the Great depression Japan suffered greatly.
- Japan became more militaristic
- Japan already had industry and a railway there so it looked like an ideal place to invade 
Why did Japan suffer after the Wall Street crash?
Japan’s main export was silk a luxury item that most people could not afford during the depression
Why was Japan looking for Land to invade during the great depression?
Japan looked for land to invade thinking it would give them more natural resources. Manchuria in North China was rich in natural resources 
When was the Mukden incident?
18th of September 1931
What happened in the Mukden incident?
Explosion occurred on the Japanese owned south Manchurian Railway
Japan blamed China but the Chinese denied that they were involved
How did the Japanese invade Manchuria?
- The Japanese government had wanted friendship with Manchuria, but the army ignored this and invaded
- When the people reacted positively, the government decided not to stop the armies invasion

What was China’s response to Japan’s invasion of Manchuria?
China appealed to the league, which was reluctant to act
Why was the league reluctant to act when Japan invaded Manchuria?
Japan was one of its leading members and Manchuria was far from Europe. The league did however issue a moral condemnation. 
How did Japan react to the leagues moral condemnation of their invasion of Manchuria?
Japan ignored the league
Why did Japan ignore the league and it’s moral condemnation of the invasion of Manchuria?
- there was very little of the league could do without its own army
- Its members did not want to send their own armies so far away
- Economic sanctions would be useless as Japan main trade partner the USA was not part of the league
What did the league eventually do after Japan’s invasion of Manchuria?
- April 1932 the league sent politician Lord Lytton to investigate
- he took nearly a year to write his report by which time Japan had invaded Manchuria
- Lytton concluded that Japan was in the wrong 
How did Japan react after Lord Lytton’s report into their invasion of Manchuria?
They ignored the report left the league and went on to occupy more Chinese territory from 1933 to 1937 
Why did the league fail in the crisis in Manchuria?
- The Land report took far too long
- Asia was far away and not viewed as vital to the countries in Europe
- The depression was already damaging world and league members were unwilling to impose economic
- , I’m willing to take military action because it would be expensive and unpopular with the public
