Why was Elizabeth’s reign called the age of discovery?
A
- Spain and Portugal played a major role in exploring the world but it was England that led the way
- sir Francis drake and sir Walter Raleigh and John Hawkins helped increase Englands wealth and power with their voyages

- he built up the navy and commanded it against the Spanish Armada
- 1564 kidnapped several hundred Africans and sold them in South America - the first time an Englishman carried out the ‘slave trade’
- brought tobacco to England

How did exploration make England wealthier?
A
- raiding Spanish ships and ports
- trade - with the east for spices and silk etc
- new companies were created to deal with trade for example, the east India company
- people copied John Hawkins and made lots of money from slaves - which also meant raw materials could be produced more cheaply
