Membranes Flashcards
1
Q
Types of membranes
A
- Cutaneous
- Mucous
- Serous
2
Q
Cutaneous membrane function and location
A
- Protect, regulate body temp, houses sensory receptors
- Skin!
3
Q
Mucous membrane function and location
A
- Produces wet lining for cavities that open up to the outside of the body for secretion and absorption
- Digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive tracts
4
Q
Serous membrane function and location
A
- Reduces friction between organs
- Lines cavities closed to the exterior of the body
5
Q
Describe the structure of a serous membrane
A
The epithelial sheet is a thin layer of simple squamous epithelium. The connective tissue layer forms a very thin, gluelike basement membrane that holds and supports the epithelial cells.
6
Q
Pericardium
A
- Serous fluid surrounds heart
- Pericardial fluid that fills the cavity
7
Q
Pleura
A
- Serous that lines pleural cavity and surrounds lungs
8
Q
Peritoneum
A
- lines abdominopelvic cavity
