Connective Tissue Flashcards
How is epithelial tissue different from connective tissue?
Epithelial tissue is avascular with no blood supply. Connective tissue is vascular and thus are rich in blood vessels, except for cartilages and tendons. Epithelial tissue also doesn’t have nerve supplies. Connective tissue is innervated except for cartilage.
Functions of CT
- Connects tissues and organs: ligaments and tendons
- Forms Skeleton: bone and cartilage
- Carries and stores nutrients: blood, bone, adipose (fat)
- Supports blood vessels and nerves: loose areolar CT
What is the extracellular matrix made of?
ground substance and fibers
What cell does all CT originate from?
Mesenchyme stem cell
- blast meaning
Produce
- cyte meaning
Maintain
- clast meaning
Break down
Collagen fiber characteristics
- strongest
- most abundant
Elastic fiber characteristics
- Stretch and recoil
Reticular fiber characteristics
support network
What CT extracellular matrix is jelly-like?
- CT proper and cartilage
What CT extracellular matrix is fluid?
Blood
What CT extracellular matrix is mineralized?
Bone
Name two cells that are found in connective tissues that are involved in defense
White blood cells and adipocytes
Areolar CT function and location
- holds fluid, packing material for organs, inflammation
- Under epithelia, surrounds nerves and blood vessels
