What is the five step communication model
Offers a valuable means of final approach in cases of resistance whereby individuals are given every chance to comply with the officers requests
Step 1 communication model
Simple appeal- ask
Ask the individual to comply with the officers request
Step 2 communication model
Reasoned appeal- tell them why
Explain why the request has been made
Step 3 communication model
Personal appeal - give options
May remind the individual that they may be jeopardising values that are high priorities to them
Step 4 communication model
Final appeal- confirm
The individual have confirmed their resistance to the officers requests
Step 5 communication model
Action- act
Reasonable force may be the only option left
