Macromolecules - 3 Flashcards
chemical reaction
When compounds are formed by the combination of 2 elements or when they are broken apart (seperated)
reactants
The two separate elements that are going to be combined in a chemical reaction
products
A combination of elements formed by a chemical reaction
4 types of macromolecules:
Carbs, Proteins, Lipids, and Nucleic Acids
elements that make up macromolecules
hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus, and sulfur
monomers vs. polymers
Monomers make up polymers. Polymers are chains of bonded up monomers.
Dehydration Synthesis vs. Hydrolysis reactions
Dehydration Synthesis is when monomers are bonded together with the loss of water, whereas in Hydrolysis, monomers are broken apart when water was added.
The Polymer, Carbohydrates, have what monomers?
Monosaccharides
The Polymer, Lipids, have what monomers?
Glycerol + 3 fatty acid chains
The Polymer, proteins, have what monomers?
Amino acids
The Polymer, Nucleic acids, have what monomers?
nucleotides
elements of carbohydrates and lipids?
C, H, O
elements of proteins?
C, H, O, N, some P and S
elements of nucleic acids?
C, H, O, N, P
energy provided in carbs?
4 calories per gram
