Lymphatic System Flashcards
lymphatic system function
bodily defense against infection
lymphatic system is composed of…
- lymph (from interstitial fluid)
- lymphatic organs + tissues (thymus gland, lymph nodes)
- lymphatic vessels + capillaries
lymphatic system: lymph
- 90% reenters blood
- 10% enters lymphatic capillaries
- circulation caused by skeletal muscle movement + smooth muscle contractions in walls
lymph: lymphatic capillaries
- blind ended
- drain into collecting tubules
- flows away from tissues
lymph nodes
- spots along length of collection vessels
- filters microorganisms, viruses or debris
lymph nodes: lymphatic vessels
right lymphatic duct: dumps lymph from upper right body into right subclavian vein
thoracic duct: dumps lymph from lower body + top left into left subclavian vein
- begins as cisterna chyli
lymphatic system: lymphatic organs classes
primary: red bone marrow, thymus
secondary: spleen, tonsils, lymph nodes
primary lymphatic organs & tissues: red bone marrow
- location of B lymphocyte proliferation + maturation
developing fetus: location of B + T lymphocyte
primary lymphatic organs & tissues: thymus
- location of T lymphocyte proliferation + maturation
secondary lymphatic organs & tissues: tonsils (locations)
- palatine tonsils > 2 in oropharynx (commonly removed)
- pharyngeal tonsils > 1 in nasopharynx (adenoids when enlarged)
- lingual tonsils > 2 at base of tongue
secondary lymphatic organs & tissues: spleen
- site of T + B lymphocyte proliferation
- filters blood
- destroys old RBC, bacteria, toxins
secondary lymphatic organs & tissues: lymph nodes (locations)
- axillary > under arms
- cervical > in neck
- inguinal > groin area
- pelvic > abdominal area
- filter lymph and activate immune system when infectious agent located
