What is a Lower UTI
A
When bacteria (usually E.coli) gets into the urethra and causes an ascending infection

What are our usually defences
A
- local immune response
- structural: cells on the wall of the bladder secrete a glycoprotein creating a mucin layer
- washout: urines pressure flushes out bacteria (urine is also sterile)
- anti-microbial properties in prastatic fluid and urine
- periurethral normal flora in woman

Risk for a lower UTI
A
catheterization, urinary obstruction (Causing urinary reflux)

Manifestations of a lower UTI
A
acute onset, usually uncomplicated
dysuria
lower back pain
frequency

Diagnosis of Lower UTI
A
the manifestations
urinalysis (signs of infection - culture taken)

Treatment of lower UTI
A
Antibiotics
treat underlying cause
