Glomerulonephritis Flashcards
what is glomerulonephritis
glomerular inflammation (always preceded by an infection)
Proliferative GN is also known as
acute post infectious GN
is this common?
yes
what infection is ace post infectious GN preceded by
beta hemolytic strep infection
what does this infection do
causes hemolysis of the blood, usually in the pharynx and the skin
where does this infection mostly occur
in children with a 95% recovery rate
- in adults this infection 30% leads to renal failure
What type of HS is it
type 3 HS
what occurs in a type 3 HS
an ABAG complex is formed (immune complex) and is unable to be broken down - gets trapped in the glomerulus - filtration is impeded
macrophages come and destroy - large holes for unwanted molecules to get in
what are 2 characteristics of APIGN
hypercellularity
- leukocytes, mesangial cells, endothelial cells
glomerular enlargement
- related to inflammation
What initially happens and then changes to what?
oliguria which leads to proteinuria and hematuria (gets through large holes from destruction)
you will see and increase in what two lab values
BUN And creatinine
this increase in indicative of what?
azotemia
a retention of what two things will lead to what two things
h20 and Na retention leads to HTN and deem (decrease osmolarity from decrease in proteins)
Treatment
mostly self limiting
symptomatic management
