Atelectasis Flashcards
What is atelectasis
structural collapse of part of the lung
is the affected part functional
no
what are the three types of atelectasis
obstructive/absorptive, compression, contraction
Explain obstructive
a/w obstruction dt mucus plug etc. air is trapped and absorbed into capillaries = lung collapse
Explain compression
pressure on the lungs ex: tumor
explain contraction
usually associated with injury. Scar tissue forms and contracts the lung tissue causing it to collapse. it is the hardest to reverse
Manifestations
decreased lung capacity decrease chest expansion on the collapsed side dyspnea tachypnea tachycardia
Diagnosis
Px, Chest x-ray, CT, bronchoscopy
Treatment
address the cause (tumor, mucus plug)
reduce constriction and reflate the collapsed lung
ambulare, deep breathing, coughing, body positions
administer oxygen
