how close the media comes to a face to face interaction - before media was more informational, now more interactive and personalized -virtual meeting places
The social integration approach
Media is not primarily information but gives a sense of belonging. People create communities
Interact more with the media itself than people- ritualized use of media as a everyday thing to do
-before people could only identify with people in medias but not interact.
- smartphone - social community of users, more than just a communication device
Media equation theory - newer media makes us feel=
Newer media makes us feel part of something bigger than ourselves. Not similar to actual face to face but simulations of presence.
Media-equation theory – treat media as people.
Social action media theory
Audience - not a mass but communities - messages interpreted through the groups.
Different meaning about media and message for different individuals and groups, depending on the use of media - meaning can shift when using media
Interpretive communities
Communities create shared understanding of consumption of medias
E.g. Harry potter - used with different meanings - adults or children
Content: the groups choice of media e.g. novels or football -
Interpretation: share interest and meaning
Social action: when and where to watch the media, and the talks about it.
