Lesson 7 Chapter 2 - Powering the PC Flashcards
Plugs and receptacles vary, but in the US what is the standard for wall outlets? (2, plug and receptacle)
numa numa
What’s my name
- Plug is NEMA5-15P
- Receptacle NEMA 5-15R
What is the 3-prong connector that connects to a desktop PC called?
IEC-320
In the US, standard AC comes in between how many volts? How is this often written as? (2)
US: 110-120V written as ~115VAC
What VAC range does the rest of the world use?
Rest of the world: 220-240 VAC
What are the 2 kinds of dual-voltage power supplies? (2)
What is the second one sometimes called (2 names)?
- Fixed-input power supply (voltage-selection switch)
- Auto-switching power supply (auto-range or auto-sense)
What’s the difference between the 2 kinds of dual-voltage power supplies?
Fixed-input:
you have to flip a switch manually in order to accommodate another voltage range auto-switching:
does that automatically (auto accommodates different regions and voltages)
What happens if you try to turn on a PC with the power supply switch set to ~230 V in the US?
It won’t turn on completely, fans might spin and LED might light up but hard drives will refuse to power on
What happens if you try to turn on a PC in a country with ~230 V standards, with the AC switch set to ~115 V on your power supply?
You’ll fry the power supply
Before plugging any critical components into an AC outlet, take a moment to do what first? With what device?
Take a moment to verify the amount of volts and amps coming out of the outlet with a multimeter
What are the 3 holes the IEC-320 plug has?
- Hot wire
- Neutral wire
- Ground wire
Describe the 3 holes the IEC-320 plug has
cold, switzerland, earth
- Hot - Carries the electrical charge (pipe that delivers water)
- Neutral - Carries no voltage (water drain, returns electricity to local source like a breaker panel)
- Ground - Allows excess electricity to return safely to the ground (such as in a short-circuit condition)
When testing AC power, you want to check for 3 things:
cold to, cold to, white to
- Hot to neutral
- Hot to ground
- Neutral to ground
What is a multimeter? What does it do?
Measures a number of aspects of electrical current
What is a multimeter often referred to as? (2)
mom, DIMM
- Volt-ohm meter (VOM)
- Digital multimeter (DMM)
What are the 4 electrical tests that multimeters offer?
insert coins, nope, v, v
- Continuity - electrons can flow from one end of a wire to the other end (checks fuses are ok, breaks in wires)
- Resistance - (substitute for continuity) A broken wire/fuse will show infinite resistance
- AC voltage (VAC) - Making sure the measured AC/DC voltages are what it should be
- DC voltage (VDC)
Do not touch what part of the multimeter?
aliens
Metal prongs
What does the auto-range meter do? (when using a multimeter)
set, own, don’t need, except
Auto-range meters set their own range, they don’t need any selection except AC V
Are AC adapters for laptops interchangeable?
No, they could have different volts and amps
What are 3 things you need to make sure match before plugging in a replacement AC adapter into a device:
v, a, p
- Voltage
- Amperage
- Polarity (which wire is hot, which is neutral… like putting a battery on backwards in a flashlight)
What happens if the voltage or amperage on an ac adapter block is higher than the device’s?
You will fry the device
What are two essential devices that handle the spikes and sags in AC power supply from an outlet?
ss, ups
- Surge suppressor
- Uninterruptible Power Supply
what are large sags in electricity called?
dirt
Brownouts
What does a surge suppressor do?
kirby, extra, protect
A surge suppressor absorbs the extra voltage from a surge to protect the devices from damage
Besides offering greater protection from stronger power surges, what’s another benefit of using a surge suppressor?
psu
A surge suppressor allows a power supply unit to have an extended life because it absorbs the small surges a power supply unit would have been handling
What is a joule?
a unit, ee
A joule is a unit of electrical energy
What unit do you use to measure how much energy a surge suppressor can handle before it fails?
Joules
What’s the minimum joules rating a surge suppressor should have?
2000 joules minimum (the more joules, the more protection)
