Q

What are the next 4 steps to installing a CPU on an uninstalled motherboard? (If replacing a CPU, go to steps to remove heat sink and fan assembly)

lift, locate, ZIF

A
  1. Lift the CPU release lever arm and retention bracket (if necessary) on the ZIF socket
  2. Locate the orientation marker on the corner of the CPU and socket (corners with missing pins should align)
  3. Hold CPU by edges, position over the socket and gently set into place (without any force)
  4. Lower and lock the release lever into place

16
Q

What are thermal pads and what are they made of? (2)

A

Thermal pads don’t need adhesion to stick onto a surface, they are made to fill the gaps in between the heat sink and the cooling fan

They’re made of aluminum and fiberglass (0.01-0.2 inches thick)

17
Q

What’s the difference between the heat sink and fan assembly for Intel and AMD fans? (2)

mount

A
  1. Intel stock fans - push the mounting pins in until they click in place (easy when motherboard is outside the case, support motherboard with one hand while installing to prevent flexing)
  2. AMD stock fans use a mounting bracket not push pins. Place heat sink, pull the lever to lock it in.
18
Q

What is thermal throttling?

reduce

A

Thermal throttling is when the CPU reduces its performance in order to prevent overheating (and damage)

19
Q

What does liquid cooling prevent? (2)

hit, reduce

A
  1. Prevents overheating/damage
  2. Prevents performance reduction
20
Q

How does liquid cooling work? (3)

roundabout, kirby,transfer

A
  1. Cool liquid flows through the heat sink attached to the CPU
  2. Hot liquid is sent to the radiator
  3. Radiator sends hot liquid to outside the case to cool down (repeat)
21
Q

What are 2 types of liquid cooling systems popular for PCs?

my hero academia, hoop

A
  1. All-in-One liquid cooling systems
  2. Custom loop coolers
22
Q

How do AIO cooling systems work?

cheese, workout, pool, groupie

A

AIO systems contain a block with a pump attached to the CPU, 2 tubes are connected to a radiator with fans to cool down the liquid

23
Q

What are 5 general steps (vary) in replacing a CPU in a laptop?

re, re, re, re, re

A
  1. Remove power sources and battery (consult the manufacturer for built-in batteries)
  2. Remove screws, panels to access CPU
  3. Remove heat sink and fan assembly, lift out CPU
  4. Replace with another CPU, apply thermal paste, reattach heat sink and fan
  5. Reconnect the fan power connector and reassemble the laptop
24
Q

How do you remove a CPU that has passive cooling and the CPU is pointed up not down?

re and re, nekked

A

May need to remove the keyboard, then remove the heat sink and fan assembly to access the CPU underneath

25
Q

What does the CMOS clear setting do? For what component is it for?

re

A

The CMOS clear setting on the motherboard resets the BIOS/UEFI utility settings to the default

26
Q

What are two reasons why someone would underclock their device?

less, slowly

A
  1. Reduced performance means reduced heat to prevent overheating and can get by with passive cooling with less fan noise
  2. Reduced power consumption
27
Q

___ rarely have problems after they’re installed

A

CPU

28
Q

What are 4 signs of CPU installation problems and how to solve them?

no fan, fan on, hot, dead/dead

A
  1. Fan is not running, or doesn’t run for more than 5 seconds
  2. Fan is spinning but PC doesn’t boot, check jumpers are correct for speed and voltage
  3. CPU overheating hear alarm, check fan installation and CPU/heat sink contact
  4. System won’t power on, fan won’t spin. CPU is seated properly? Components were unseated during installation?
29
Q

What are 4 signs of cooling issues?

re, fire, key, jordin

A
  1. Spontaneous reboots
  2. Occasional alarms from the tiny PC speaker
  3. Lockups
  4. Excessively loud fans
30
Q

You should attach the ___ to the heat sink before installing

A

fan

31
Q

What are the 4 general steps to installing a heat sink?

re or apply, mount, stock, fight the

A
  1. Remove protective tape of thermal paste if pre-applied, or apply a thin film of thermal paste to the raised center of CPU package
  2. Align mounting bracket hardware on heat sink/fan with the mounting notches on the CPU socket
  3. Intel stock fans use the push pins until it clicks, AMD fans use mounting bracket and pull lever to lock in place
  4. Plug the fan’s power cable into the appropriate socket/header on motherboard
