Q

Since RAM is extremely sensitive to ESD, what are some precautions to take while transporting, handling and installing it? (4)

shop, license, wear, don’t

A
  1. Keep it in an antistatic bag until ready to use it
  2. Label the bag with the type, size, and speed
  3. Wear an ESD strap before handling it
  4. Don’t touch the contact points or circuits, handle it by the sides

fight the, hair, hold, above, pokemon

A
  1. Power down and unplug computer
  2. Push the retention clips completely outward
  3. Hold the RAM by the edges, don’t touch the chips
  4. Hold RAM above slot, matching notches with notches on slot and press straight down
  5. Snap the clips firmly into place

What do the sockets for DDR3-5 look like on a motherboard?

catdog, hair and repair, exact

A
  1. DDR3 - A retention clip at both ends
  2. DDR4 - 1 retention clip and 1 fixed guide rail on the other end
  3. DDR5 - Needs to be an exact matching DDR5 slot

Q

How do you remove a DIMM?

hair, lever

A

Push the retention clip(s) outward, which acts as a lever that slightly ejects the RAM so you can remove it

What are the 5 steps to installing SODIMM?

right, config, re, extract, re

A
  1. Acquire the right RAM for the specific laptop
  2. Check configuration of existing RAM and max RAM allowed
  3. Remove electrical power and batteries
  4. Unscrew, open underside of the laptop, press out on the restraining clips to pop out RAM
  5. Remove RAM and insert new one. Reverse steps.

What do you do if you see a parity or ECC error?

left, if it’s real then… ghost

A

Write down the ECC/parity memory address and if it shows up again and it’s the same address it’s real, but this error can still appear even on devices without ECC RAM/parity

Q

What could cause RAM stick incompatibility?

install

A

If you install multiple RAM sticks of differing speeds or configurations (single versus double-sided) you can create instability

some motherboards can handle the differences, some can’t

17
Q

What could cause a faulty RAM component? (2)

A
  1. ESD
  2. Damage during transport/storage
