Q

What is catastrophic ESD damage? How would you know it happened?

A

It immediately fries the component, you would know as you would most likely feel the shock that happened

Q

What is hidden ESD damage? How would you know it happened?

A

Hidden ESD damage is caused by a build-up of dust over time, and this can create a small electrical charge that can make a component behave erratically. (Charge doesn’t cause obvious damage)

It’s difficult to pinpoint the cause by this point.

Q

What is ESD degradation? How would you know it happened?

A

ESD gradual degradation is similar to hidden ESD damage and is caused by cumulative low-level electrical damage over time and gradually gets more noticeable. Components will also behave erratically and it’d be hard to pinpoint the cause.

Q

What is electrical potential?

over 9000

A

Electrical potential is your body’s (or a component’s) charge relative to the zero ground of the Earth

Q

What should you ALWAYS do before touching a pc component? How can you do this (2)?

A

Always discharge ESD before touching components
1. Touch the metal case
2. Touch the metal power supply

Q

What type of components are more susceptible to ESD? Why? (3)

A

Motherboards, RAM, and adapters are more susceptible, any exposed circuit boards will be more vulnerable

Q

What’s a warning when using anti-static wraps and straps?

high

A

Always take off your antistatic wraps and straps before handling or being near any high-voltage components as it can actually make the potential damage WORSE

Q

How do anti-static bags work?

jacket, gill

A

Anti-static bags have a coating on the inside that dissipates static electricity along with filaments that line the interior of the bag. The static is sent to the outside of the bag.

16
Q

How do antistatic bags work best?

omelette, stick

A

Antistatic bags work best when they’re closed, so it’s best to fold over the edge and tape it down with an antistatic sticker if possible

17
Q

What’s an important warning when working with antistatic bags?

A

NEVER place components on top of the bag, this will actually damage the components and is worse than not having a bag at all

18
Q

What type of bags should you never use to store components?

A

Plastic bags cause static electricity, and paper bags don’t protect
