Lesson 4 Chapter 2 - ESD Precautions and Procedures Flashcards
Humans usually don’t feel anything less than 3,500 volts of static electricity but as little as __ volts can damage a circuit board
5 volts
What are the 3 types of ESD damage?
- Catastrophic damage
- Hidden damage
- Gradual degradation
What is catastrophic ESD damage? How would you know it happened?
It immediately fries the component, you would know as you would most likely feel the shock that happened
What is hidden ESD damage? How would you know it happened?
Hidden ESD damage is caused by a build-up of dust over time, and this can create a small electrical charge that can make a component behave erratically. (Charge doesn’t cause obvious damage)
It’s difficult to pinpoint the cause by this point.
What is ESD degradation? How would you know it happened?
ESD gradual degradation is similar to hidden ESD damage and is caused by cumulative low-level electrical damage over time and gradually gets more noticeable. Components will also behave erratically and it’d be hard to pinpoint the cause.
What are 4 anti-static protection devices you can use?
down, cover
- Antistatic wrist or ankle wrap
- Antistatic placemat
- Antistatic floor mat
- Antistatic bag
Antistatic devices make your body’s ____ ____ the same as the ___ ___ of your PC/component
Antistatic devices make your body’s electrical potential the same as the electrical potential of your PC/component
What is electrical potential?
over 9000
Electrical potential is your body’s (or a component’s) charge relative to the zero ground of the Earth
What should you ALWAYS do before touching a pc component? How can you do this (2)?
Always discharge ESD before touching components
1. Touch the metal case
2. Touch the metal power supply
What type of components are more susceptible to ESD? Why? (3)
Motherboards, RAM, and adapters are more susceptible, any exposed circuit boards will be more vulnerable
What’s an example of a component with less risk of ESD?
cage
An enclosed device such as a hard drive has less risk than circuit boards for ESD
Antistatic wraps and straps use what level of resistor that protects against very low-level static electricity only?
kilo
1-megaohm resistor, protects against very low-level static electricity only
What’s a warning when using anti-static wraps and straps?
high
Always take off your antistatic wraps and straps before handling or being near any high-voltage components as it can actually make the potential damage WORSE
How do anti-static bags work?
jacket, gill
Anti-static bags have a coating on the inside that dissipates static electricity along with filaments that line the interior of the bag. The static is sent to the outside of the bag.
Always store ___ ___ and ____ in antistatic bags when not in use or transporting them
Adapter cards and drives in antistatic bags
