Lesson 2 Chapter 3 - Devices and Their Connectors Flashcards
What are 2 ways that the devices that support peripherals plugged into ports are added onto a system unit?
- Devices are built into the system unit
- Devices are added to the system unit via expansion card
What are display adapter cards? What functionality do they add?
Display adapter cards typically provide 1 or 2 ports for video connectors (for monitors)
What are expansion slots?
Expansion slots are spaces in the system unit that allows the installation of an expansion card
What do you do if you want to add a new device that isn’t already built into the system unit? How do you add it?
If it’s not built into the system unit, you can easily buy the expansion card version of the device and install it by snapping it in
Can laptops accept expansion cards?
Yes, but they’re installed differently from Desktop PCs
What are 3 ways laptop expansion cards are different from desktop expansion cards?
- Installed parallel not perpendicular to the motherboard
- They do not add external accessibility ports
- Smaller than desktop expansion cards
How do people install an externally accessible peripheral on a laptop?
Using the USB ports
Keyboard and pointing devices are always connected to a PC in what way?
USB ports
(if not wireless)
Keyboard and pointing devices operate fine on which 2 ports?
USB 1.1 and 2.0
How do wireless keyboards and mice communicate with the PC? (2)
- USB transceiver - a USB transceiver is plugged into the computer and it communicates with the peripheral device using its own proprietary connection
- Bluetooth - Bluetooth-enabled computers and devices communicate via the Bluetooth interface
What are the 3 types of video connectors? What color are they?
- VGA (blue)
- DVI (white)
- HDMI (black)
How does a monitor connect to a system unit?
A monitor connects to a system unit through a video connector
What does VGA, DVI, and HDMI stand for?
VGA - Video Graphics Array
DVI - Digital Visual Interface
HDMI - High Definition Multimedia Interface
What’s the difference between analog and digital in terms of video conversion?
Analog - signals that are modulated (receives complete frames) and de-modulated (translating signal to video/audio) in order to be used
Digital - sent and stays in binary format (1s and 0s)
What year was VGA introduced?
1987
