Lesions Of The Mucosa Flashcards
What are causes of vascular red lesions?
telangectasias: hereditary or radiation induced
Sublingual variecies
Haemangiomas
What are the causes of red lesions?
Vascular Infective Purpura Erosive Reactive Atrophic Neoplasm
What are the causes of red infective lesions?
Fungal: candida Viral: Herpes, zoster Mucositis ; radio or chemo Deep mycosis Immune reaction: plasma cell gingivitis, GvHD, granulomatous
What are the causes of red purpura?
Platelet disorder
Trauma
ABH
What are the causes of red erosive lesions?
Burns
Erosive or atrophic LP
VB
What are the causes of reactive red lesions?
Pyogenic granuloma
Gingival Epulis
Fibroepithelial polyp
What are the causes of atrophic red lesions?
Atrophic lichen planus
Erythroleukoplakia
Erythema migrans
Iron defeciency states
What are differential dx of red neoplastic lesions?
Kaposis sarcoma
Amelonotic melanoma
SCC
What are the causes of white lesions?
Congenital
Others: burns
Infective/ Inflam
Neoplasms
What are the causes of congenital white lesions?
Leukoedema: usually seen on buccal mucosa
Dyskeratosis Congenita: genetic mutation
White sponge Neavus
What is leukodeama?
More common in smokers and black people and people that smoke cannbis it is associated with oedema within the superficial epidermal layers
What are the causes if infective / Inflam white lesions?
Infective: syphylis and candida and EBV(hairy leukoplakia)
Inflam: LP/Lupus
What are the neoplastic diagnosis for white lesions?
SCC
Leukoplakia
What are the two Broad causes of pigmented lesions ?
Intrinisic or extrinsic
What are the causes of intrinsic localised lesions?
Amalgam tattoo Foreign body Chronic Inflam eg lichen planus in darker skinned people Pigmented neuroectodermal tumour Melanocytic
What are the types of Melanocytic lesions?
Macule
Naevus
Melanoma
Where are macules normally found?
Palate and lip
Brown less than 1cm
How do Neavus usually present?
Less than 1 cm and black blue raised and on the palate
What are the causes for generalised intrinsic pigmented lesions?
Drugs eg CHX/ OCP/ Anticonvulsant/ Antimalarial
Smoking
Hypoadrenalism increased ACTH: synthacten test
Post inflam
Genetic eg racial or peutz jeghers
Black hairy tongue: overgrowth of pigment producing organisms with benign overgrowth of film form papilla and lack of normal Desquammation
Haematochoromsis
What are mycoses?
Fungal infections affecting humans and animals
How can mycoses occur?
Inhalation of fungal spores or localised colonisation of the skin may initiate an infection
Give an example of a mycoses affecting the epidermis?
Tinea (Ring worm) Tinea pedis (ring worm)
What is white sponge naevus?
AD defect in keratin causing a benign familial disorder. Lesions are typically white, symptomless, bilateral on buccal mucosa with folded edges. E/O sites include anus, genitals, pharynx, nose and URT
What is the treatment for white sponge naevus?
family history and examination is usually sufficient however is there is some confusion with another lesion then biopsy is indicated
Who is hairy tongue more common amongst?
Smokers
Poor OH
Hypo salivation
What is the managemt for black hairy tongue?
Suck on peach stone OH Tongue scrape Surgical shave Podophylin paint
