Q

What is the function of the masseter muscle? and what two processes does it connect

Q

What is the function of the pterygoid muscle and what two processes does it connect?

Q

What is the function of the diagastric muscle and what two processes does it connect?

Q

Describe the oropharynx:

A

Caudal to the palatoglossal arches and ends at the epiglottis. Entered by the isthmus faucium. “Fauces” hallway at the junction between these two processes

Q

Describe the process involved in deglutation:

A
  1. Bolus is formed in the back of the tongue
  2. Bolus is pressed against the hard palate squeezed caudally
  3. The bolus enters the oropharynx and stimulates reflex + and then the tongue is jerked backwards propelling the bolus further back caudally
  4. The hyoid apparatus is swung forward bringing the pharynx to meet the bolus
  5. The pharynx dilates to receive the bolus of food
  6. Pharyngeal constrictors contract sequentially moving the bolus caudally
  7. Tongue relaxes and returns to normal position
  8. The cranial oesophageal sphincter relaxes
  9. Bolus is propelled down the oesophagus by primary peristaltic wave
  10. The hyoid apparatus returns to it’s resting position
