Lecture 11 Flashcards
Name the parts of the brain using the three part and five part systems
- Forebrain (prosencephalon) - Telencephalon and Diencephalon - Midbrain (mesencephalon)- Mesencephalon - Hindbrain (Rhombencephalon)- Metencephalon and Myelencephalon
What is the function of the telencephalon?
associated with: - higher processing and intelligence - regulation of motor function - smell and memory and emotions
What is the function of the basal nuclei?
- controls voluntary movement and functions involved in motor planning centres
What is the function of the thalamus?
- principle relay centre for sensory information that is projecting to the cortex
What is the function of the tectum?
- two pairs of swellings that act as relay systems for visual and auditory inputs
** What is the structures comprise the limbic system and what is their function?
- structures that comprise the limbic system consist of cortical gyri, the hippocampus, the fornix and the amygdala The functions of the limbic system are: - Emotions- fear - Spatial and short term memory - The amygdala is active in aggressive behaviour and fear
What is the main function of the epithalamus (pineal)?
The main function of the pineal gland is to secrete melatonin
