What is the function of the furcula and the coracoid?
Together the structure of the Furcula (fused clavicles) the coracoid and the rod like scapula forms a structure that assists to support the wing. Efficient system to lose weight while still ensuring that a solid base is present for the wing.
What is the function of the Synsacrum?
The synsacrum refers to the last thoracic, lumbar, sacral and first caudal vertebrae that are all fused together with the function of losing weight. Deeply concave ventrally and functions to support the bipedal posture.
What is the function of the cere?
Refers to the soft covering around the nares within a bird. They are blue in budgies.
What is the function of the syrinx?
The syrinx refers to a tracheal bifurcation that produces voice by vibration of tympaniform membranes
What is the function of the air-sacs?
Refers to a series of structures located in sequence with one another, no gas exchange occurs within them but they have been thought to have a function in air cooling.
What is the function of the parabronchi?
They form parallel looped arcades through the lung, connecting the secondary bronchi. They feed tiny air capillaries and are intertwined with blood vessels. They are a surface of gas exchange.
What is the crop?
Refers to an expansion of the oesophagus that has a storage function. It is subcutaneous and palpable.
What is the proventriculus?
Refers to an expansion that is located before the ventriculus and serves as the equivalent of the glandular stomach.
What is the ventriculus?
A thick muscular expansion of the stomach and has a grinding function. Birds will often ingest shell grit or stones to assist in the grinding function of the stomach.
What is the function of the cloaca?
Refers to a common urogenital chamber that is partially divided by annular folds. This portion of the stomach will also have an external opening called the vent.
