Lecture 6 (Behavior And Animal Welfare) Flashcards
What is Behavior>
- what animals do to control and interact with their environment
- the outward expression of the internal states of the animal
- actions of the animal towards its environment
What is ethology?
Scientific study of behavior
What behaviors are we interested in?
- normal behavior
- abnormal behavior
- Stereotypies
- Redirected behaviors
What is normal behavior?
- “wild ancestors”
- feral conspecifics
- Domesticated conspecifics in semi-natural environments
What is abnormal behavior?
Behavior that is away from normal behavior
- statistically rare
- different from population
- differs in pattern, frequency or context
What is behavior based upon to be abnormal?
Appearance
Quantity
What are some examples of abnormal behavior appearance?
- stereotypies (bar biting, pacing, weaving)
- destructive (tail biting, feather-pecking, cannibalism)
What are some examples of abnormal behavior quantity?
Aggression
Inactivity
Unresponsiveness
How do we study abnormal behavior?
- evaluate impact of environments on frequency of abnormal behavior
- associate the behavior with other welfare indicators
- identify the motivational basis of the behavior
What is stereotypic behavior?
Repetitive, unvarying, and apparently functionless behavior patterns
- regulates stress response
What is redirected behavior?
Typical motor patterns are performed, but directed towards different substrate or in a different context
What are some examples of redirected behavior?
sucking, chewing, nosing, self - mutilation, pica, inappropriate sexual behavior
