Lecture 11 (part 2) Flashcards
What are The types unsaturated fats?
Cis and trans
Cis=same side of the double bond, common natural isomer
Trans=opposite side of the double bond, often produced commercially through hydrogenation
What is the importance of the omega acids?
Alpha-linolenic acid (omega - 3) and alpha-linoleic acid (omega-6)
- unsaturated fatty acids
- dietary essential
- precursors for the synthesis of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids that are key for animal health
What are the functions of proteins?
- tissue accretion (growth)
- structural components
- milk production
- enzymes
What are the protein structures?
Primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary
Primary - linear sequence of amino acids
Secondary - local folding originated from interactions of closely positioned amino acids
Tertiary - more distant interactions within a polypeptide chain
Quaternary - interactions between different peptide chains
What are the 10 essential amino acids?
Phenylalanine, Valine, Threonine, Tryptophan, Isoleucine, Methionine, Histidine, Arginine, Leucine, Lysine
PVT, TIM, HALL
