Animal Welfare
Represents the view that animals under human care should be maintained under conditions that do not pose unnecessary harm
In animal welfare the animal should be
- healthy
- comfortable
- safe
- able to express innate behavior
- not suffering from unpleasant states
Ethics
A system of moral values that provide the basis fo the determination of what a person believes is right or wrong
Animal rights
The belief that animals have intrinsic rights to life and liberty, just as humans
Approaches to animal welfare

- biological - functioning based
Feelings approach
Defines animal welfare in terms of emotions
- feelings are subjective and inferred
- tied to bodily responses
Aka affective states
Animal choices approach
The animal is allowed to choose between certain aspects of its environment and the assumption is made that the animal will choose according to its best interests
- can be influenced by prior experiences
Nature of the species
Approach states that animals should be raised in their natural environment in natural ways
Aka natural living
Five Freedoms
Outlines the elements necessary for ideal welfare and defines the husbandry and resources required to promote this ideal state
- does not consider social behaviors
What are the 5 freedoms
- freedom from hunger and thirst
- freedom from discomfort
- freedom from pain,injury or disease
- freedom to express normal behavior
- freedom from fear and distress
Biological functioning
Aims to define the biological costs associated with the environment
Performance - growth rate, age, productivity
Immunity - health status, disease prevalence, resiliency
