Lecture 5 Notes Flashcards
Incidence
Describes the rate of people with the development of a disease in a group over a period of time
- usually per year
What is the formula for incidence?
(# of persons development of a disease) x (unit time)
What is Madigans, 2015 definition of incidence?
The number of new cases reported in a population in a given period of time
What is an example of incidence?
The incidence of chicken pox in first grade children was 10% a day at the height of the epidemic
Prevalence
The total number of people who develop a disease at a specific point in time, regardless of when it first appeared
What is the most frequently used measure in epidemiology?
Counting of the number of people with the disease
What is the formula for prevalence?
(# of people with the disease) / (total number of people in the group)
What is an example of prevalence?
Prevalence of diarrhea in the children’s camp on July 13th was 33%

The incidence of illness (disease) in a population
- includes both fatal and non-fatal diseases
What could morbidity refer to? (2)
- Incidence
2. Prevalence
What is an example of morbidity?
Morbidity rate genital chlamydia in Canada in 2000 was 32%
Mortality rate
Incidence of death in a population
What is the formula for mortality rate?
(# of people dead/total # in the group) x (unit of time)
What is an example of mortality rate?
The mortality rate varied from 25%-33% of Europe’s population during plague epidemics in the middle ages
Case fertility rate
The number of confirmed cases that died of the disease
