Lecture 36: Ruminant Male Reproductive System (Exam 3) Flashcards
Describe the flehman response
Get the scent of the female/urine into the olfactory system
Label the following:
Label the following
List the basic movement of sperm through the repro system
Teste -> ductus deferens -> urethra
Label the following
Where is the prostate found
Dorsal to the Urethra
What occurs in males w/ PNS & SNS stimulation
- PNS - erection
- SNS - ejaculate
T/F: Semen is made in the testes
False; The testes make sperm & during ejaculation fluids are added to the sperm to create semen
Label the following
Label the following of the sperm
Label the following ovum
Describe male sex cells
- Produced by testicles
- Contained in the scrotum
What is the scrotum
External sac that hold testicles outside of the body to keep sperm @ 4 to 5 degrees cooler than body temp
What are the primary roles of the testicle
- Produce sperm
- Secrete testosterone
Whose sperm is bigger mouse of an elephants
A house mouses sperm
What is the ductus deferens
Slender tube from the epididymis to the urethra which moves sperm to the urethra @ ejaculation
What is the urethra
- Long tube from the bladder to the penis
- Passageway for urine & sperm out of the body
What is the difference btw/ the type of penis in equine & ruminants
- Equine have a musculocavernous type of penis
- Firbroelastic type of penis
What is the penis
Male organ of copulation which conveys semen & urine out of the body
What is the penile retractor muscle
- Allows extension & retraction of the penis
- Sigmoid flexure extends in copulation
Label the following
What is the role of the prepuce
Covers the penis to protect the glans penis when not in use
Label the following
What is this
Frenulum
What is the frenulum
- Used to spray there scent around
- Used to “spray” semen into the female
Describe the descent of the testicles
- Begins w/in the abdomen caudal to the kidneys
- Testicles are located retroperitoneally btw/ the peritoneum & the body wall
- The gubernaculum passes ventrally through the inguinal canal into the scrotum
- The testicles & epididymis follows the gubernaculum
- As the testicle moves through the inguinal canal it picks up the parietal peritoneum & the fascial layers of the inner & outer abdominal wall (Becomes the vaginal tunic once outside of the abdomen
Describe the inguinal canal
- An opening in the caudal part of the abdominal wall
- It is a potential space btw/ the flesh of the internal abdominal oblique & aponeurosis of the external abdominal oblique
- The deep inguinal ring is found @ the free edge of the internal abdominal oblique
- Superficial inguinal ring lies btw/ the pelvic & abdominal oblique aponeurosis
Label the following
What is the gubernaculum
- A jelly like cord stretching from the testicle to the tail of the epididymis then goes into the inguinal canal
- Becomes the scrotal ligament
What are the components of the spermatic cord
- Ductus deferens
- Testicular VAN
When do the testes descent
- Varies by species
- Horse usually 10 14 days before or after parturition
- Ruminants & pigs it occurs before parturition
How do sperm cells travel through the repro system
Made in testicle -> head of epi -> body -> tail -> ductus deferens -> urethra -> glans penis -> if they have it the urethral process
Label the following (just the numbers #)
What is the pampiniform plexus
Coil of testicular veins around the testicular artery that are used to draw heat away from the artery to cool blood before it reaches the testicle
Label the following
What happens in the head & body of the epididymis
Spermatozoa mature into mature sperm in the head & body
What is the mesorchium
The serosal folds connecting the visceral & parietal vaginal tunics
Label the following
Label the following
Describe the epididymis
- Long coiled tube that is a path for sperm
- Provide passageway for the sperm to exit out of the seminiferous tubules
- Storage for sperm
- Fluid secretion to nourish the sperm
- Place for sperm maturation
Label the following:
What are the accessory glands in the ruminant male repro system
- Seminal vesicles
- Prostate glands
What is the job of the seminal vesicles
Add fructose & citric acid to nourish the sperm
Describe the prostate gland
Located @ the neck of the bladder
* Cleans the urethra prior to & during ejaculation
* Provides minerals for the sperm
* Provides the medium for sperm transport
* Provides the characteristics odor of the semen
What is associated w/ the urethra & adds the liquid portion of the ejaculate
Accessory sex glands
Fill out the following
Slide 34
What is the cowper’s gland
- Also called the bulborethral gland
- Paired organs
- Cleans the urethra prior to sement passage
Label a & b
- a: vesicular gland
- b: bulbourethral gland
