what structures make up the small intestine?
Duodenum
Jejunum
Ileum
What holds the small intestine in place?
Mesentery
Role of Mesentery?
Anchors SI to abdominal wall, allows movement but prevents it from getting tangled.
What structures does the mesentery contain?
Arteries, veins, nerves and lymphatics
whats’s delivered to the small intestine?
Chyme
What happens in the small intestine?
Further digestion and then absorption.
What are the major layers of the digestive tract?
Mucosa
Submucosa
Muscular Layer
Adventitia
What are Plicae Circulares
Permanent large folds in the small intestine. Create the core of the submucosa.
Where can villi be found
Bound on the surface of plicae circulares
What allows villi to move back and forth ?
Muscularis Mucosae
Structure of villi?
Core of each villi is made of FCT (lamina propria) Contains vessels; lymph lacteal., capillary network.
Role of lymph lacteal?
Transports products of fat digestion
Role of Capillary network?
Transports products of protein digestion
What is drained via mesenteric veins?
Nutrient rich, deoxygenated blood absorbed in the small intestine.
Where does mesenteric veins drain?
Into the hepatic portal vein
