Lecture 21 DA Flashcards
What does the ANS innervate?
Everything aside from skeletal muscles.
Are sympathetic ganglia more distant to the organ?
Yes.
Are parasympathetic ganglia more distant to the organ?
No, the are close to or within the organ.
Where does the pelvic floor and lower bowels get its autonomic supply?
From the inferior hypogastric plexus.
Is there any sexual dimorphism in pelvic floor nerves?
Males have more nerves, but the density is higher in females.
What is the clinical significance of the inferior hypogastric plexus?
It can be damaged in prostatectomy, hysterectomy and cystectomy, and can be mistaken for another structure or remain unidentified as there are so many branches.
What is the pelvic nerve?
The inferior hypogastric nerve compacts to a single nerve called the pelvic nerve. It is parasympathetic in rats.
