Lecture 15 Flashcards
How is framing layout of a structure prepared?
In plan view, reffered to as a framing plan
Why is roof plan different than floor plan?
Difference in floor and roof loads
Top two framing members used?
W-Sections for primary elements, and steel joists for secondary elements
Objective of selecting steel beams
Use the lightest steel section that will resist bending and shear forces within allowable limits of stress and without excessive deflection
What are open-web joists?
Lightweight, shop fabricated steel members having a trussed web
How are open-web steel joists supported?
A wall of masonry or reinforced concrete, or by steel beams or joist girders, whcih are heavier versions of open-web joists.
How are joists spaced?
Related to the magnitude of the floor load, the spanning capability of the decking material, the load carrying capacity of the joists, and floor construction epth desired.
Composite and form deck can be made to act compositely with the supporting beams by using…
shear studs (prevent slippage of the deck under bending of the underlying beam, similar to nails that connect a plywood deck with supporting wood joists)
Unlike masonry and site-cast concrete construction…
structural steel components are brought to the site in a prefabrictated and finished state, ready for erection and assembly
Is there any work on structural steel components?
Not much work, details prepared before, details up to fabricator,
Who orders the materials for structural steel?
The fabrictator
How does it work in fabricator?
Mostly semi-automated, welding manually, automated welding system for long lines.
What is riveting?
White hot faster is inserted through holes in members to be fastened. Prodcues head on plain end. Not used as much today
What is welding?
Steel surfaces are joined by being heated to a molten state.
Welding over Bolting
Larger range of applicability, no bolts, continuity
