Construction Materials Flashcards
carriage bolt
round head with square shoulder ; wood to wood Ribbed Neck Carriage Bolts can be used in for assembling wood, plastic, soft metals or composite materials together or to a steel frame. Low profile head and a fastener that can be installed from the nut side of the assembly. The low profile head ensures that there is no interference with material or objects as they slide over the head of the product.
Eye Bolt
A bolt having a head in the form of a loop or an eye. Commonly used to thread rope or cable and hang items such as baskets or hammocks from a wood member; only forged eye bolts for tree support systems
J-Bolt Assembly
J-shaped bolt with threads at bottom; use washers and nuts; May be used as an anchor bolt when cast in place, they are inserted into concrete while it sets in a desired location, with the threading sticking out so that things can be bolted down. J bolts can also be inserted through drilled holes in metal and wood, with the loop of the bolt creating a very sturdy hook.
L-shaped Anchor Bolt Assembly
- Type of anchor bolt
- Cast into concrete
- Often used to attach metal light post to a footing
lag bolt
- screw/bolt hybrid - only avail. w/ hex head
- To drive in screw w/hex head, need to use a nut driver; used when a lot of torque is required.
- used when you’d use a bolt but can’t get to another side.
- generally used to connect heavy lumber and other materials that bear an intense load.
- Must pre-drill holes
Lag Bolt and Expansion Shield
A lag bolt used in combination with an anchoring device having an expandable socket that swells as a bolt is tightened into it; used in masonry walls for attaching timber.
Lag Bolt with Fiber Plug
- Type of expansion shield.
- The Fiberplug is a braided jute fiber screw style anchor designed for use in concrete, block, brick, and stone.
- A lead lining on the sheet metal and wood screw sizes makes it possible for the screw to reproduce its own thread, and keeps the jute fibers from being cut by the screw
Erosion techniques are used to control what?
Sediment
What does a wetland bottom channel with overbank storage in an urban setting offer?
- Lowers flow velocities resulting in longer concentration times
- Creates a greenbelt that can support wildlife
- Provides reasonable safety for residents if flow velocities are kept low and side slopes are 3:1 or less
- Decreases in peak flows downstream
Machine Bolt Assembly
A threaded bolt having a straight shank and a conventional head such as a square or hexagonal. Requires the use of a nut two wrenches or socket drives to tighten. Used where access is available to both ends of bolt. Machine Bolt Assembly - Probably refers to a machine bolt with accompanying washers and nut.
Machine Bolt with Expansion Shield
A Machine Bolt used in combination with an anchoring device that swells as a bolt is tightened into it.
Threaded Rod Assembly
A threaded rod, also known as a stud, is a relatively long rod that is threaded on both ends; the thread may extend along the complete length of the rod. They are designed to be used in tension
Toggle Bolt Assembly
A toggle bolt is a two-part fixture consisting of a bolt and spring-loaded “toggle wings” that pop open on the backside of the wall material, providing a sound anchor for tightening the bolt.
Cement Nail
A very strong nail that resists bending when placed into such a hard surface. One of the common uses for cement nails is to tack down flooring materials installed on a concrete slab.
Common nail
A standard sized nail used for the fastening of framing members in wood light frame construction
Finish Nail
Has small head that is intended to be driven completely beneath the surface of the wood it is holding down, leaving a minute entrance hole that may be filled in.
Hook Nail
Nail with hook at end, used for tying rope, etc.
