Lecture 15 Flashcards
What is a photoautotroph?
Producers of the biosphere that convert solar energy into chemical energy
How can we get energy from plants
Photosynthesis - carbs - fermentation - ethanol - combustion - energy
What is a wavelength
Distance between crests
What is visible light
Wavelength that we can see
What is chlorophyll?
A pigment- coloured molecule
Where is chlorophyll in leaves located?
In chloroplasts, high numbers in mesophyll cells
What is the structure of a chlorophyll
Head is ring with magnesium center, hydrophobic tail of chlorophyll anchored in thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts
Describe the photosynthesis redox reaction
- CO2 reduces to glucose (need a source of electrons)
- H2O oxidized to oxygen(water is sounds of electrons)
How does CO2 enter the leafs of plants (and oxygen exits)
Through the stomata-pores, generally on the lower surface
What is the “machinery” of light reactions
- photosystems 2,1
- mobile electron carriers
- a cytochrome complex
- NADP+ reductase
- ATP synthase
What the difference between photosystem 2 and 1
2 - happens first absorbs light highly at 680 nm
1 - happens second absorbs light at 700 nm
What are the major processes of photosynthesis?
Light reactions and Calvin cycle
