Lecture 12 Flashcards
How does a cell regulate metabolistic pathways?
The cell will shut off the pathway that is not needed by the presents of excess intermediate or product that will shut the pathway that produced it by binding to enzyme that produced it
(Prevents waste of chemical resources)
What is exergonic and endergonic?
Exergonic is getting a negative delta G where as endergonic is getting a positive delta G
What governs metabolism
Thermodynamics
What do cells created ordered structures out of and what does it cause?
Less ordered materials, and it creates disorder elsewhere (heat and molecules) matter and energy are conserved
What is energy of activation?
Energy that must be absorbed for the reaction to reach the transition state
How do enzymes speed up reactions
By lowering Ea by allowing molecules to absorb energy to reach transition point
What are the ways an exergonic breakdown of glucose can occur?
-in aerobic (using oxygen) respiration ~glycolysis ~krebs cycle ~ oxidative phosphorylation - fermentation -anaerobic respiration
What is oxidation?
Transfer of electrons in formation of ions
What are the reducing agents and oxidizing agents
Reducing agent gives up electron(gets oxidized)
Oxidizing agent takes electron (gets reduced)
