Physical activity and affect
Affect is a general overview of how we feel. To answer the question “how do I feel, we take into account our moods and emotions
Emotion
(e.g surprise, angeer, fear, happiness, excitement) occurs in response to a situation or event)
Mood
(typically +ve or -Ve) is less intense and not linked to any one particular situation
Feeling scale
Is used to measure the umbrella term affect, can simply ask someone how they’re feeling rn. Can be used before during and after exercise
Positive affect ……….. negative affect……..
Positive affect is a component of good psychological well-being, negative affect is a symptom of mental ill health
Affect has a motivational force
The way we feel influences our behvaoiur- people choose to do things that make them feel good and avoid what makes them feel bad
If we have a lot of negative experiences it can cause
negative affect may therefore choose not to exercise
Exercise intensity has the strongest influence on…
How you feel during exercise
To ensure a positive psych well-being, we need to ensure exercise
feels good
Much more positive response in moderate exercise than
HITT
After exercising we feel better than we did before
Irrespective of exercise intensity (adrenaline)
When we tell people what intensity to exercise at, we cannot guarentee that they will feel good during it
Its a complicated relationship
- Competition winning or loosing
- Energy levels
- Accomplishments
- Social element
- Pre exercise feeling can also effect us during
Importance of cognitive appraisal
Of phsiological symptoms
Focus on attention

On psychological factors
Your ability (self confidence, sense of achievement)
Your motivation (what am I getting out of this)
This cognitive appraisal will differ withe exercise experience
At HIGH intensity exercise
At HIGH intensity exercise, physiological symptoms dominate to cause affective response
Let people choose their own intensity : chose to exercise at 69% of their HR
47% found an increase in affective feeling
26% found a decrease in affect feeling
In conclusion -exercise intensity
Exercise intensity affect relationship is complicated and it is difficult to know how people will respond to an intensity you prescribe
Consider how that experience can be interpreted more positively
-Autonomy over intensity
-Different exercise environments
-Changing the cognition appraisal
