Lecture 1 Flashcards
what is the respiratory system responsible for?
acquiring oxygen
removing carbon dioxide
the cardiovascular system is responsible for?
transporting oxygen to tissues
transporting carbon dioxide away from tissues
what does the integration of respiratory and cardiovascular systems allow?
movement of gases between the air and the body’s cells (external respiration)
the pulmonary artery travels in what direction in relation to the heart
away from the heart
the pulmonary vein travels in what direction in relation to the heart/
travels towards the heart
what does the pulmonary circulation deliver and pick up?
delivers co2 to the lungs and picks up O2
where does gas exchange occur?
at the lungs
at the systemic capillaries
what does the upper respiratory tract consist of? (6)
pharynx vocal cords esophagus nasal cavity tongue larynx
what does the lower respiratory tract consist of? (4)
right lung left lung right bronchus left bronchus diaphragm trachea
where do aspirated foreign bodies commonly lodge in the bronchi?
the angle of the right bronchi
what are the two cells the alveoli are composed of?
type1
type2
what do type 1 cells of the alveoli do?
gas exchange
what do type 2 cells of the alveoli do?
synthesize surfactant
Gas exchange between the lungs and the blood is only possible where?
the alveoli
the air in the upper airways is know as “anatomical dead space” why?
because it cannot participate in gas exchange as the walls are too thick
