Lect 3 - Cell Anatomy (DNA) Flashcards
Process of Creating Proteins
DNA undergoes transcription to create RNA which undergoes translation to become Protein
Where does transcription occur
Nucleus
Where does translation occur
Cytoplasm
Transcription Process
RNA polymerase binds to promoter to initiate transcription
DNA is split
RNA polymerase joins free nucleotides and pairs them with DNA nucleotides
Completed mRNA is then transported through nuclear pores into the cytosol
Translation Process
mRNA binds to small ribosomal subunit
mRNA and tRNA are lined up by initiation factors
Large ribosomal subunit binds and initiation factors dissociate
Peptidyl transferase on large ribosomal subunit successfully adds a.a. according to mRNA template
Termination sequence is reached and peptide is released
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Has ribosomes
Produces, folds, and controls quality of protein
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Synthesizes lipids, sterols, and hormones
Detoxification
