Lab Nitrogenous Bases Flashcards
Two classes of Nitrogenous Bases
Purines (A and G) and Pyrimidines (C, U, and T)
The sugar is covalently linked to a nitrogen of the purine or pyrimidine
Nucleosides
A hydroxyl group on the sugar of the nucleoside is covalently linked in an ester bond with phosphoric acid
Nucleotides
Macromolecules in which the nucleotides are linked by phosphodiester bonds between 3’ and 5’ positions of the sugars
Nucleic Acids
A=T and C=G
Ex) 10% A means 10% T and 40% G and 40% C
Hydrolysis of DNA and RNA under controlled conditions yield
Nucleotides
Further hydrolysis of nucleotides yield
Nucleosides
Nucleosides degrade to
Sugar and Nitrogenous Bases
Consists of two chains of polynucleotides
DNA
DNA is stabilized by
H bonds between base pairs
A blue compound is formed when DNA is treated with
Diphenylamine under acidic conditions
Furfural in the presence of ferric chloride yields a green color when it reacts with
Orcinol
RNA turns green when it reacts with
Orcinol
DNA turns blue when it reacts with
Diphenylamine
