Cell Bio Practical (Lab 1) Flashcards
Stains that help with viewing size, shape and arrangement
Basic Dye
Basic stain
Positive Chromatophore
aka nuclear stains
Acidic stain
Negative Chromatophore
aka Cytoplasmic stains
Basic stain that dissociates
Methylene Blue Chloride
Differential stain used to distinguish and differentiate
Gram Stain
Gram Positive
Purple
Gram Negative
Pink
A basic dye, primary stain in Gram
Crystal Violet
Acts as a mordant (a substance that increases the affinity of cells for the crystal violet dye)
Iodine
Removes the dye from the cell
Alcohol (or acetone) called a Decolorizer
A basic dye of a different color that is used to counter stain the cell if the crystal violet is removed by the decolorization solution
Safranin
Ability to distinguish close together objects
Resolving Power
the size of the cone of light the lens can receive
Numerical Aperature
Attached to the rotating nosepiece, or turret, at the base of the body tube
Objectives lens
The process of enlarging an object only in appearance
Magnification
The ability to tell two points apart as separate points
Resolution
The vertical distance with which structures are in sharp focus is called
The Depth of Focus
The distance from the bottom of the microscope lens to the part of the specimen that is in focus
Working Distance
