Lab 5 – Integumentary System Flashcards
epidermis
consists of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium which helps protect against friction and dryness
dermis
deepest component of skin
lies b/n epidermis and hypodermis
organized into 2 layers
papillary dermis
reticular dermis
hypodermis
aka subcutaneous fat layer
located just deep to the skin layer
consists of adipocytes
main functions – insulation, energy storage as fat, protection, and anchoring the superficial layers of skin
stratum basale
4
aka stratum germinative, basal cell layer
innermost layer
consists of dividing cells that gradually push older cells nearer the outer surface where they finally form stratum corner
older cells go thru keratinization and progressively die and become packed w/ tough, fibrous, waterproof protein called keratin
stratum granulosum
2
granular cell layer
stratum lucidum
