L2: Development Flashcards
Development is a continuous process from conception to maturity
β¦
The two main processes occur during development: β¦..
The direction of development is β¦.
cephalo-caudal
- The infant controls his head before he can sit
- The infant crawls before he can walk
- The sequence of development is β¦. in all children
- The rate of development β¦. from child to child
- There is normal inter-individual variation
similar, varies
There are sex differences, where girls on the whole are β¦β¦ in their development than boys especially in social and communication skills
earlier
The development process reflects the maturation of β¦.
the brain and nervous system
Assessment of development
Denever development screening test (DDST)
Fields of Denever development screening test (DDST
These fields are:
ο Gross motor (locomotion, motor)
ο Fine motor (Adaptive, sensory-motor, manipulation or hand-eye coordination)
ο Personal-social (Social)
ο Language (communication)
Def of Gross motor
- It includes posture and large body movements (performed by groups of large muscles) e.g. head control, sitting, standing, etc.
Def of Fine motor
Coordination of hands and eyes, using fingers for reaching, grasping, and manipulating, etc.
Def of Social (Cognitive)
- Social reaction of child with his surroundings and relatives and his adaptation to the environment e.g. play, self-care, etc.
Def of Language βCommunicationβ
The ability to communicate:
- Verbally (οintact hearing,οoral musculature, οspeech centers)
- Non-verbally (οuse of 4 gestures, οfacial expressions and οbody language, οsign language)
Assessment of development in premature infants
Primitive reflexes
β These are normal reflex behaviors that appear early in life (maybe in utero)
