kidney ontogeny and phylogeny Flashcards
urogenital paired glands develop in the
abdomen and pelvis
intermediate mesoderm becomes
segmented column
called nephrotomes
column develops into
3 different kidneys at different stages
the 3 different kidneys
- pronephros - develops in the cervical region
- mesonephros - thoracic/lumbar
- metanophros - pelvic
ascent of metanephric kidneys
begins in week 6
when the kidney fails to ascend
horseshoe kidney
- left and righmetanephric kidneys become attached in the pelvis and cannot ascend above the inferior mesenteric artery
pronephros
found in primitive freshwater fish
mesonephros
appears in week 4
smaller glomerulus and larger tubular network compared to pronephros
derived from thoracic and lumbar nephrotomes
tubular network connects directly to
mesonephric duct
metanephros
comes from metanephric duct
the higher vertebrate definitive kidney
grow from dorsal side of pelvic mesonephric duct
appears in week 5
metanephric urine
not a waste product - the placenta is still present for that
primary role is to make amniotic fluid
this is how functionality of kidneys is tested - amniotic fluid level will be sufficient
ascent of metanephric kidney begins in

ascent of the metanephric kidneys - coexists with
mesonephros
metanephric duct during ascent

arterial component of the metanephric kidneys during ascent
acquires new paired branches as kidneys ascend to upper abdomen
