Joints and movements lecture 5 Flashcards
Structure where two bones meets
Joints (articulations)
Diathrosis
freely moveable joint
ex: metacarpals, shoulder, arm
Amphiartrosis
partially moveable
ex: between pelvis and sacrum
Synarthrosis
Do not move
ex: suture of skull, teeth
Synovial Joints
all diarthrodial joints,
4 components of Synovial Joints
- Articular cartilage
- Joint capsule
- Restraining Ligaments
- Bursae
Articular cartilage
hyaline cartilage covering ends of bones
Joint Capsule
connective tissue surrounding joint, hold synovial fluid
Restraining Ligaments
provides stability to joints, limits normal ranges of motion
Bursae
fluid filled sacs reduce friction
Cartilaginous joint
joints joined by cartilage
ex: fibrocartilage joins bones of pubis at the pubic symphysis
(2 parts of the pelvis come together)
Fibrous Joint
joints formed by dense connective tissue
ex: suture of skull
origin of muscle
fixed and less moveable
Insertion of muscle
moves towards the origin as muscle contracts
Isotonic muscle contraction
muscle contracts, builds tension and changes length
Concentric Isotonic muscle contraction
muscle contracts and shortens
Eccentric Isotonic muscle contraction
contracted muscle lengthens
Isometric contractions
muscle contracts against equal force, no joint movement
ex: planks
Prime Movers (agonists)
muscle responsible for action
Synergist
muscle that assist prime mover
Fixator
muscle that stabilizes joint
antagonist
muscle that reverse the action of prime mover
Flexion
decreases angle between articulating bones
ex: forearm to arm
Extension
increase angle
ex: bring forearm away from arm
Lateral Flexion
moving to the side
Abduction
lateral movement away from middle
adduction
lateral movement towards middle
Pronation
turn arm posteriorly
Supination
rotate palm anteriorly
Plantar Flexion
ankle move down like pressing on gas pedal
Dorsiflexion
ankle back up from stepping on gas pedal
Inversion
sole of foot move towards medial
Eversion
sole of foot move lateral
Protraction
anterior movement
shoulders foward
Retraction
Posterior movement
shoulders back
Elevation
superior movement
close mouth
Depression
inferior movement
open mouth
Opposition
movement of thumb to grab things
