Histology Flashcards
The study of tissue structure and function
What does Histology mean?
The study of tissue structure and function
Four primary tissue types
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscle
- Nerve
2 Levels of Epithelial Tissue
- Simple
- Stratified
3 Shapes of Epithelial Cells
- Squamous(flat)
- Cuboidal(Square)
3.Columnar(rectangle)
Simple Squamous Epithelial
Single flat layer of cells
Functions of Simple Squamous Epithelial
filtration and secretes lubrication
Simple squamous can be found?
Air sacks of Lungs, lymphatic vessels, ventral body cavity, kidney glomeruli
Simple Cuboidal
Single layer of cub like cells
Functions of Simple Cuboidal Epithelial?
Secretion and absorption
Where can Simple Cuboidal be found?
Kidney and Ovary surface
Simple Columnar Epithelial
Single layer of tall cells with round oval nuclei some may have cilia (small hair)
Functions of Simple Columnar?
Absorption, secretion of mucus, enzyme, and other substances
Where can you find Simple Columnar Epithelial tissue?
Nonciliated- digestive tract (stomach to anal canal)
Ciliated- uterine tubes, some regions of uterus
Pseudostratified Columnar
A layer of cells at different heights
Functions of Pseudostratified Columnar?
Secretion and mucus
Location of Pseudostratified Columnar?
Nonciliated- male sperm, ducts of large glands
Ciliated- Lines the trachea, most of the upper respiratory tract
Stratified Squamous
several flat cell layers
Functions of Stratified Squamous
Protects tissue in areas subjected to abrasion
Location of Stratified Squamous?
Nonkeratin- moist lining of the esophagus, mouth, and vagina
Keratinized- forms the epidermis of the skin
Transitional Epithelial
Dome at the top
The function of Transitional Epithelial
Stretches out
Location of Transitional Epithelial?
Lines the uterus, bladder, and part of the urethra
Nervous Tissue
Neurons of cells
The function of Nervous Tissue
Transmit electrical signals to muscle and glands
Where can you find Nervous cells?
Brain, spinal cord, and nerves
