Joint Instability Flashcards
1
Q
What are common instabilities?
A
- Hip luxation
- Carpal hyperextension
- Tarsal instability
- Gastrocnemius enthesopathy
- Digit luxation
- Medial shoulder instability
- Biceps Tendinopathy
2
Q
What are causes of carpal hyperextension? Dx?
A
- High rise fall
- Degeneration
- Inflammation
- Collateral ligament injury
- Dx = Clinical exam (compare with other limb) + Radiographs (need stressed views)
3
Q
What does management of carpal hyperextension depend on?
A
- Degree of lameness
- Dysfunction
- Exercise tolerance
- Trauma
4
Q
What does management of Tarsal instability depend on?
A
- Degree of lameness
- Dysfunction
- Exercise tolerance
- Almost certainly SURGICAL
5
Q
What is Gastrocnemius enthesopathy seen in?
A
- Large breed dogs
- Thickened calcaneal
- Crabbed toes
- Partial / complete plantigrade stance
- Almost Always SURGICAL
6
Q
What is treatment of digit luxation?
A
- If stable =
-Secured with splint
-P2/P3 luxation = cutting nail short + unguinal crest ostectomy - Unstable =
-Surgery = stabilisation / Digit amputation
7
Q
What problems do you get with shoulders?
A
- Biceps rupture / tendinopathy
- Medial shoulder injuries
- Luxations
8
Q
How can you diagnose shoulder problems?
A
- Clinical signs =
-Decreased in performance to weight bearing lameness
-Pain on shoulder examination = flexion, biceps, adduction, abduction
9
Q
What would you see with a ruptured biceps brachii?
A
- Fully hyperextended elbow with shoulder in full flexion
10
Q
What with the shoulder can you rule out on radiographs?
A
- Neoplasia
- Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD)
- OA
