John Chapter 09

Question 1

9 Et praeteriens Jesus vidit hominem caecum a nativitate:

As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. (John 9:1)

2 et interrogaverunt eum discipuli ejus: Rabbi, quis peccavit, hic, aut parentes ejus, ut caecus nasceretur?

Answer 2

His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” (John 9:2)

Question 3

3 Respondit Jesus: Neque hic peccavit, neque parentes ejus: sed ut manifestentur opera Dei in illo.

Answer 3

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. (John 9:3)

Question 4

4 Me oportet operari opera ejus qui misit me, donec dies est: venit nox, quando nemo potest operari:

Answer 4

As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. (John 9:4)

Question 5

5 quamdiu sum in mundo, lux sum mundi.

Answer 5

While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (John 9:5)

6 Haec cum dixisset, exspuit in terram, et fecit lutum ex sputo, et linivit lutum super oculos ejus,

Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. (John 9:6)

7 et dixit ei: Vade, lava in natatoria Siloe (quod interpretatur Missus). Abiit ergo, et lavit, et venit videns.

“Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. (John 9:7)

8 Itaque vicini, et qui viderant eum prius quia mendicus erat, dicebant: Nonne hic est qui sedebat, et mendicabat? Alii dicebant: Quia hic est.

His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” (John 9:8)

9 Alii autem: Nequaquam, sed similis est ei. Ille vero dicebat: Quia ego sum.

Answer 9

Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.” (John 9:9)

10 Dicebant ergo ei: Quomodo aperti sunt tibi oculi?

“How then were your eyes opened?” they demanded. (John 9:10)

11 Respondit: Ille homo qui dicitur Jesus, lutum fecit: et unxit oculos meos, et dixit mihi: Vade ad natatoria Siloe, et lava. Et abii, et lavi, et video.

Answer 11

He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.” (John 9:11)

12 Et dixerunt ei: Ubi est ille? Ait: Nescio.

Answer 12

“Where is this man?” they asked him. “I don’t know,” he said. (John 9:12)

Question 13

13 Adducunt eum ad pharisaeos, qui caecus fuerat.

Answer 13

They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. (John 9:13)

Question 14

14 Erat autem sabbatum quando lutum fecit Jesus, et aperuit oculos ejus.

Answer 14

Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath. (John 9:14)

Question 15

15 Iterum ergo interrogabant eum pharisaei quomodo vidisset. Ille autem dixit eis: Lutum mihi posuit super oculos, et lavi, et video.

Answer 15

Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.” (John 9:15)

16 Dicebant ergo ex pharisaeis quidam: Non est hic homo a Deo, qui sabbatum non custodit. Alii autem dicebant: Quomodo potest homo peccator haec signa facere? Et schisma erat inter eos.

Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others asked, “How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?” So they were divided. (John 9:16)

Question 17

17 Dicunt ergo caeco iterum: Tu quid dicis de illo qui aperuit oculos tuos? Ille autem dixit: Quia propheta est.

Answer 17

Finally they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” The man replied, “He is a prophet.” (John 9:17)

18 Non crediderunt ergo Judaei de illo, quia caecus fuisset et vidisset, donec vocaverunt parentes ejus, qui viderat:

The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. (John 9:18)

Question 19

19 et interrogaverunt eos, dicentes: Hic est filius vester, quem vos dicitis quia caecus natus est? quomodo ergo nunc videt?

Answer 19

“Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?” (John 9:19)

Question 20

20 Responderunt eis parentes ejus, et dixerunt: Scimus quia hic est filius noster, et quia caecus natus est:

“We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. (John 9:20)

Question 21

21 quomodo autem nunc videat, nescimus: aut quis ejus aperuit oculos, nos nescimus; ipsum interrogate: aetatem habet, ipse de se loquatur.

Answer 21

But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” (John 9:21)

Question 22

22 Haec dixerunt parentes ejus, quoniam timebant Judaeos: jam enim conspiraverunt Judaei, ut si quis eum confiteretur esse Christum, extra synagogam fieret.

Answer 22

His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. (John 9:22)

Question 23

23 Propterea parentes ejus dixerunt: Quia aetatem habet, ipsum interrogate.

Answer 23

That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” (John 9:23)

Question 24

24 Vocaverunt ergo rursum hominem qui fuerat caecus, et dixerunt ei: Da gloriam Deo: nos scimus quia hic homo peccator est.

A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God, “ they said. “We know this man is a sinner.” (John 9:24)

Question 25

25 Dixit ergo eis ille: Si peccator est, nescio; unum scio, quia caecus cum essem, modo video.

Answer 25

He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” (John 9:25)

26 Dixerunt ergo illi: Quid fecit tibi? quomodo aperuit tibi oculos?

Answer 26

Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” (John 9:26)

Question 27

27 Respondit eis: Dixi vobis jam, et audistis: quod iterum vultis audire? numquid et vos vultis discipuli ejus fieri?

Answer 27

He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?” (John 9:27)

Question 28

28 Maledixerunt ergo ei, et dixerunt: Tu discipulus illius sis: nos autem Moysi discipuli sumus.

Answer 28

Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses! (John 9:28)

Question 29

29 Nos scimus quia Moysi locutus est Deus; hunc autem nescimus unde sit.

Answer 29

We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.” (John 9:29)

Question 30

30 Respondit ille homo, et dixit eis: In hoc enim mirabile est quia vos nescitis unde sit, et aperuit meos oculos:

The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. (John 9:30)

Question 31

31 scimus autem quia peccatores Deus non audit: sed si quis Dei cultor est, et voluntatem ejus facit, hunc exaudit.

Answer 31

We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will. (John 9:31)

Question 32

32 A saeculo non est auditum quia quis aperuit oculos caeci nati.

Answer 32

Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. (John 9:32)

Question 33

33 Nisi esset hic a Deo, non poterat facere quidquam.

Answer 33

If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” (John 9:33)

Question 34

34 Responderunt, et dixerunt ei: In peccatis natus es totus, et tu doces nos? Et ejecerunt eum foras.

Answer 34

To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out. (John 9:34)

Question 35

35 Audivit Jesus quia ejecerunt eum foras: et cum invenisset eum, dixit ei: Tu credis in Filium Dei?

Answer 35

Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” (John 9:35)

Question 36

36 Respondit ille, et dixit: Quis est, Domine, ut credam in eum?

Answer 36

“Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.” (John 9:36)

Question 37

37 Et dixit ei Jesus: Et vidisti eum, et qui loquitur tecum, ipse est.

Answer 37

Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.” (John 9:37)

Question 38

38 At ille ait: Credo, Domine. Et procidens adoravit eum.

Answer 38

Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. (John 9:38)

Question 39

39 Et dixit Jesus: In judicium ego in hunc mundum veni: ut qui non vident videant, et qui vident caeci fiant.

Answer 39

Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” (John 9:39)

Question 40

40 Et audierunt quidam ex pharisaeis qui cum ipso erant, et dixerunt ei: Numquid et nos caeci sumus?

Answer 40

Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?” (John 9:40)

Question 41

41 Dixit eis Jesus: Si caeci essetis, non haberetis peccatum. Nunc vero dicitis, Quia videmus: peccatum vestrum manet.

Answer 41

Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains. (John 9:41)
