Intro to Metabolism Flashcards
What is produced during Glycolysis?
2 pyruvate, 4 ATP (2 net), 2 NADH (per 1 glucose)
What is produced in Kreb’s cycle?
4CO2, 6 NADH, 2 FADH2, 2 ATP (per 1 glucose)
What happens in oxidative phosphorylation?
Electrons and H+ ions pass between transmembrane complexes and generate the formatiion of ATP and H2O
What are the intermediates of Kreb’s cycle?
Acetly-CoA - Citrate (6C) - Isocitrate (6C) - a-ketoglutarate (5C) - Succinyl-CoA(4C) - Succinate (4C) - Fumarate (4C) - Malate (4C) - Oxaloacetate (4C) - Citrate (6C)
How are fat metabolised?
Fatty acids (in liver) - Acyl CoA - Acyl Carnitine (translocates to liver mitochondrion) - Acyl CoA - b-oxidation - Acetyl CoA (krebs) - Ketone Bodies - Blood
Why are fats better sources of energy than glucose?
They generate 8 acetyl CoA molecules per fatty acid broken down = 131 ATP
