Intro to Biology Pt 2 Flashcards
What is bonding?
Sharing relationship between electrons & neighboring elements
What is the strongest, most stable bond?
Covalent bond
What are 3 types of chemical bonds?
- Covalent
- Ionic
- Hydrogen
What is the weakest bond?
Hydrogen Bond
What is a covalent bond?
Strongest bond. most stable. electron sharing. mutually beneficial relationship (like marriage)
What is matter?
Anything that has mass & takes up space.
What is mass?
The physical composition of a particle
What is mass not?
Mass is Not weight
What is weight?
Mass is = to Mass X Gravity
What are 4 states of matter?
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
- Plasma
How many states of matter are there?
4 (3 on earth)
Describe a solid
Rigid, low energy, defined shape & volume.
Describe a liquid
Fluid, moderate energy, defined volume, no shape.
Describe a gas
Disruptive, erratic, high energy, no defined volume or shape.
Describe plasma
Extremely high energy, observed in space in stars
What is sublimination?
When a solid is condensed directly to a gas skipping the liquid stage (dry ice)
What is energy?
Ability to do work (heat, light, wave manipulation)
What is potential energy?
Stored energy, potential to be used
What is kinetic energy?
Energy in use
What is an atom?
Smallest subunit of an element that maintains its physical properties
What is an element?
Molecules with distinct characteristics & identities.
Substance that can not be broken down chemically into another substance.
How many subatomic particles do atoms contain?
3
Electrons, Protons, Neutrons
Name 3 subatomic particles.
- Electrons
- Protons
- Neutrons
Do protons have a Positive or Negative charge?
Positive (+)
Do Electrons have a positive or negative charge?
Negative (-)
Do Neutrons have a positive or negative charge?
Neutral = Neutrality
