A&P Flashcards
Name the 4 food stages?
- Food - before injestion
- Bolus - Chewed up food mixed w/ saliva
- Chyme - bolus mixed w/ stomach acid & further
- Feces - digested food & bacteria
What does the digestive system do?
Breaks down foods
2 types of digestion
- Mechanical Digestion - Physical impact on the food item
- chewing - muscle contractions of the stomach - Chemical Digestion - Breakdown via enzymes & chemical compounds - saliva - stomach acid -intestinal enzymes
Define Amalase
enzyme that begins to breakdown the starches
Central incisors
front flat teeth
Lateral Incisors
Cutting teeth sightly curved
Canine teeth
Holding & tearing food
Bicuspid Teeth
used for grinding up foods
Molars
Used for grinding foods
Nasopharyngeal cavity
where nasal and oral cavity meet
Pharynx
voice box
Larynx
vocal cords
Sublingual gland
saliva gland
Submandibular gland
saliva gland near your back teeth/mandible
Parotid gland
saliva gland near back of mouth, tube carries it into cheek.
Uvula

Trachea
Ridged pathway to lungs
swollowing
voluntary or in voluntary muscle reaction
peristalsis
involuntary muscle contractions
Esophageal spincter
prevents back flow into esophagus
top valve of the stomach
Pyloric spincter
valve between stomach & intestines
bottom valve
Rugeuy
layers of stomach not a flat smooth surface
small intestine
full of digestive enzymes provided by the pancreas
Bile
material that comes from the pancreas and gail bladder
Name the 3 parts of the small intestine
- Duodenum
- Ileum
- Jejunum
Duodenum
1st part of the small intestine
this is where the enzymes are added to chyme
Ileum & Jejunumm
remaining portions of the small intestines
Iliosecal valve
connects small and large intestines
