Refers to interactions that occur between people whose cultures are so different that communication is altered
Intercultural Communication
This term composes of individuals living in a community
Society
Refers to people living in a same place with shared characteristics (e.g. interests, goals, attitude, culture, etc.)
Community
This term refers to the following:
→ a way of life of a group of people
→ focuses on behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols
→ generally accepted by people without thinking about them
→ passed along via communication imitation from one generation to the next
Culture
This culture values personal rights, responsibilities, privacy, freedom, innovation, and self expression
Individualist Cultures
This culture values community, collaboration, shared interests, harmony, public good, and avoiding embarrassment
Collectivist Cultures
A kind of context wherein verbal messages are direct, specific, and detailed (i.e. expressive)
Low Context (you don’t need much context clues to counter vagueness)
A kind of context wherein the messages are based from the context of when and where they were expressed (i.e. indirect)
High Context
What are the 2 example countries/regions given for having low context?

Latin America and Asia
This refers to the value of time in life (e.g. punctuality and deadlines)
Chronemics
This characteristic is exhibited when people do several things at once (multitasking) because they see time in a continuous flow; they practice flexible schedules
Polychromic
Refers to following traditional gender roles
Masculinity
Refers to when people assume a variety of parts regardless of sex
Femininity

→ states that entities can be non-human (i.e. language)
Co-Culture
When a co-culture interacts with a dominant culture:

Assimilation
When a co-culture interacts with a dominant culture:
Refers to acceptance of a culture
Accommodation
When a co-culture interacts with a dominant culture:
Refers to ignoring/being against a culture
Separation
This happens when co-cultural groups alter their linguistic and non-verbal patterns to conform with the dominant group
Code Switch
Which culture dictates what is accepted (race, ethnicity, sex and gender, sexual orientation, religion, age/generation, and disability) within a certain area?
Dominant
The notion that people of different cultures are more superior than others
Ethnocentrism
Refers to the labelling of people’s culture in general
Stereotyping
This can be done through formal studying, observation, and immersion
Acquire accurate knowledge
This refers to tolerating ambiguity, being open-minded, and being optimistic
Adopting an appropriate attitude
This can be done by practice listening, intercultural empathy, and flexibility
Developing culture-centered skills
Aside from being either individualist or collectivist, cultures could also differ in terms of the following (6):
- Context
- Chronemics
- Uncertainty avoidance
- Power distance
- Masculinity and Femininity
- Long/Short Term Orientation
